If you want to learn more about the Columbine school shooting that took place in 1999, Columbine is definitely the book for you. Journalist Dave Cullen spent ten years researching every angle and it really is a complete account of the tragedy. His book covers an enormous amount of material, including the childhood years of the killers, how they planned the shooting, the shooting itself and the entire aftermath. The reader learns not only about the killers, their mental states, their motives and their actions, but also about the victims lives, their parents and families, the school and the community. In a very straightforward manner, Cullen also debunks many of the myths surrounding the shooting.
I listened to the audio version of this book and highly recommend it. The book itself is very well-written and the narration was excellent. Although I did struggle a bit with it because it was so gut-wrenching and heartbreaking to hear details of the shooting, I was really uplifted and struck by the amazing resilience of so many of the victims and their families. Sometime in the future I definitely want to read A Mother’s Reckoning by Sue Klebold, mother of shooter Dylan Klebold.
