Lately I seem to be on a graphic novel kick and The One Hundred Nights of Hero by Isabel Greenberg is fantastic. In fact, if you are new to graphic novels and are wondering which one to start with, this might be a great choice for you. Not only are the illustrations are beautiful and interesting, but the stories within this novel will captivate you.
The story is loosely based on The Arabian Nights. A wicked man named Jerome makes a wager with his friend Manfred. If Manfred can seduce Jerome’s wife Cherry in one hundred nights, then Manfred can keep Cherry and Jerome’s castle.
However, Cherry and her maid Hero are secret lovers and when they hear about the wager they devise a plan to distract Manfred during all 100 nights. Hero tells magical and mesmerizing tales to him, full of love and betrayal. This was such a wonderful reading experience for me. I read it in one evening because I was all caught up in the various tales. Greenberg also wrote The Encyclopedia of Early Earth, so that is now the next book on my graphic novel to-read list. Happy reading!
